Take your teaching career to Bexley
Bexley is one of London’s biggest boroughs with a population of about 232,000. It lies in South East London and borders the River Thames as well as 3 other London boroughs. It makes for a perfect base for trips around England and Europe. Could you see yourself teaching here?
More about Bexley
It is an area that has largely developed as an extension of London since the 19th Century: before that, it was mostly countryside! The borough includes some areas of high-density housing but also some large open spaces. The Borough owns and maintains over one hundred parks and open spaces, large and small; and there is still a part of the Erith Marshes bordering the River Thames. The Crayford Marshes lie to the east of that river, as do Foots Cray Meadows further south.
The largest of the open spaces are Lesnes Abbey Woods, Danson Park and Hall Place Gardens. There are also many golf courses and sports fields, particularly to the west of Crayford.
Bexley is a popular place to live for teachers as it tends to be less expensive than the inner London boroughs and yet it is very easy to travel into the centre from there. Trains into London Cannon Street or Charing Cross from Bexley or Bexleyheath take c35 minutes – faster than a lot of tube journeys. The newly built Elizabeth Line is due to start service in 2018 and this will make the northern part of Bexley even more accessible and popular with easy rail journeys across London from the east and west from Abbey Wood. London Transport makes finding and planning routes and booking journeys very simple at and the National Rail site is excellent for rail journeys. It is worth remembering that for all journeys using public transport in the London area the cheapest option is to use an ‘Oyster’ card (available from stations and many shops) or a contactless bank card.
There is also City Airport just across the river with rapid links using the forthcoming Elizabeth Line and the DLR: it is easy to fly from there to destinations all over Europe.
The Eurostar rail service to Europe is close by at Ebbsfleet in Kent making it very easy to visit destinations in western Europe by train. From Ebbsfleet, you could be in Paris in 2hrs 12m!
